This oven cleaning hack is simple enough; All you need is one lemon! But does it really work?
The oven is one of the most difficult appliances to clean. Those stubborn, baked-on stains are hard to remove, and tough stains require tough detergents. This is why most oven cleaners are heavy duty and full of chemicals and fumes. So I was definitely curious (and a little skeptical) when I saw this viral oven cleaning hack. Can You Really Clean Your Oven With Just Lemon? I had to give it a try.
Can Lemon Really Clean Your Oven?
It’s no secret that lemons are good for cleaning. The bright yellow citrus fruit contains citric acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Acids are effective at removing stains and cleaning limescale, and they can also fight rust. Lemon is also a natural antibacterial and can neutralize bad odors. I’ve used lemons to clean my microwave and garbage disposal, and the results have been positive.
But the oven seemed more difficult. The glass door was brown with stains, and the bottom of the oven wasn’t much better. In the past, I mostly stuck It’s easy to get out To clean my oven, and while it’s working—I’d like to take a more natural approach.

I followed the instructions from this TikTok user’s viral video @employee (I posted more details in the comments) To clean my oven with lemon. Follow along to conduct your own lemon cleaning experiment!
Step 1: Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The idea behind the hack, however, is that the hot water and lemon create steam and soften stains inside the oven while the lemon water heats up.
Step 2: Cut the lemon into slices
Cut the lemon into thick slices. I cut the lemon into four slices. I realized the high temperature, and I wanted the lemon to be really strong so it wouldn’t simply break into bits as it “cooked”.
Step 3: Add lemon and water to the dish
Fill an oven-safe bowl or dish with water, then add the lemon slices. I squeezed the lemon slices so that the lemon juice mixed with the water before it fell into the slices.
Step 4: Bake
“Bake” the lemon water in the oven for 20 minutes at 400 degrees.
Step 5: Cool and Clean
After baking the lemon water for 20 minutes, turn off the oven and let the water cool for 10 to 20 minutes. (I tried to go clean after 10 minutes, but the water was still too hot to touch, so I let it cool for an additional 10 minutes with the oven open.) Once it cools, dip a microfiber cloth in the lemon water, and scrub the inside of the oven. and the door.
Results: not bad!
I’ll admit, I didn’t have high hopes that a single lemon would be strong enough to clean my oven. But it worked fine! You definitely didn’t get your oven glass as clean as this heavy-duty oven cleaner, but you can see how much dirt and grease I was able to wipe away with the cloth. It was most effective on the bottom of the oven, where I was able to remove most of the stains. I think next time, I might increase the baking time as well as the cooling time; We hope to create more steam. Bottom line: I won’t be giving up my Easy-Off anytime soon, but I do think the lemon hack is great as a quick method, to use between deep cleansing sessions.
